It’s time to get crunchy!
I’ve been reading One Good Thing By Jillee for a couple years now and she has a DIY shampoo on there that has coconut milk in it. I didn’t go that far because I was in a hurry, but maybe I’ll try adding that in some day. Also adding in some essential oils would be good too to boost the yummy smelliness.
I bought some Dr. Bronners Organic Castile Peppermint Soap. It is 3 times concentrated, but I didn’t get specific with my dilution. I just took an old Pantene bottle with a pump. Tossed on Dr. Bronners in there and added some water until I thought it was diluted enough. #imsuperscientificyall
So far it is working really well. I have thick hair that is thin in texture. So basically I have a lot of oily hair. I have to use 3-4 pumps to get all the oil out of my hair, but other than that I don’t have any complaints. One nice thing about it is that I don’t have to use conditioner anymore. Since there aren’t any harsh chemicals, my hair is getting striped of all the good oils. #prettydamnawesomeifyouaskme #husbandapproved

Yo! It’s been awhile. Sorry fo that! I got bored and overly self-critical. I thought I was bitching and complaining too much on here and even thought about closing it down. However, I re-read some of my old posts and realized that I had a good sense of humor and the world deserved to read some of my sarcasm. So here I am again. #sorryandshakingmyhead
I am becoming a crunchy granola hippie. Srsly peeps. I had no idea there was so much toxic crap out there. Everything is trying to kill us by poison and cancer.
I’m over exaggerating, but I read that your skin absorbs 65% of the things you put on it. So when you use sunscreens, lotions, perfumes, shampoos, conditioners, etc. your body is absorbing 65% of the chemicals they use in those products. The main thing that can happen is that is can upset your hormone balance and skin allergies, but also can cause auto-immune diseases and in some rare cases cancer.
I knew an American lady that lived in Aruba for 40 years. They don’t wear sunscreen there and they believed that mass produced sunscreens caused skin cancer. I don’t know about all that. I googled it and it seems logical that putting a bunch of chemicals on your skin can be dangerous. If you’re interested you should look into it if you’re curious.
I also read recently that some store bought shampoos are using a highly processed form coconut oil in their products that is a known carcinogen. So I decided to start making my own shampoo. Since then I’ve been looking into other things that I can make on my own. Mostly in an effort to be more frugal, but also because I’m sick and tired of being lied to by corporations.
So I think I’ll start a crunchy series. I’m gonna post what products I’m replacing and diy recipes that I’ve found around the interwebs. I’ve already tried a few and they seem to be working just fine. My in-laws came for a visit last weekend and Timothy was so excited to tell them about all the products I’ve been making at home. It’s a little embarrassing telling people you make your own deodorant.

I really needed to scream. Thanks. So here’s what happened.
Boss Lady: “Did you get a haircut?”
Me: “No, it’s actually time for a trim. My hair grows really fast and it’s been about a month since my last cut.”
Boss Lady: “You’ve got a DA (duck ass) going on back there. You want me to trim it for you?”
Me: “No that’s okay. I’m planning to get a trim this weekend.”
Boss Lady: “I’ve been cutting peoples hair for years. My mother was the like the town hair cutter.”
Me: “Oh, that’s nice.”
Boss Lady: “I’m just gonna trim off a little bit.” (Grabs the scissors from my desk. SNIP) “You should buy some clippers. Your neck is starting to look like a monkey.”
Me: (Too traumatized to speak.)
20 minutes later…..
Since I can’t look in the mirror, I’m hoping there isn’t a lot of damage. I promptly made a haircut appointment for Thursday night.

Sorry for the silence in the word department. I hope you’ve been enjoying my pics from IG, because I haven’t had a whole lot going on until this week. #snowpocalypse2014 #snowjam2014
What a week it has been. I think I might have developed PTSD when it comes to traffic in Atlanta. I was one of the lucky ones on Tuesday and here’s my story. Looking back it feels like a dream. #amiawake
Timothy had only one class on Tuesday. So we car pooled and he took me to work, ran a few errands and then headed down to Emory for class. I had heard that Atlanta might get some snow so I asked my employer if I could go home early and if it was bad enough work from home on Wednesday. Of course she agreed, and I called Timothy to let him know that he should come pick me up after class.
He had just gotten to campus at about 12:30 and checked his email before walking to class. Emory sent out an email at 12:30 canceling classes effective at 1pm. So he headed back to Buckhead to pick me up. Then the shit started hitting the fan. #shit
As soon as snow flakes started dropping, there was a mass exodus from my office park, but I wasn’t worried about it one bit. Little did I know that I would be embarking on an 8 hour adventure home.
I got all my stuff packed up from work and saw that people were sliding down the driveway to the office park. So I called T and told him not to come down and that I would walk up and meet him on the corner. Traffic was so bad that he couldn’t get to me. I had to walk through traffic to get in the car. I didn’t eat lunch because we were trying to beat the traffic. #mistake
We took our normal route home only to discover that traffic was not moving. So I began trying to find an alternate route. We went on a few back roads only to find wrecks and people sliding down hills. So we headed back to 41 which is a major 4 lane highway. We sat on 41 and only moved 3/10ths of a mile in an hour. So again, I found another alternate route. Long story short we ended up backtracking a little bit but we were able to find roads that were not piled high with cars or wrecks. So all together we ended up driving 33 miles in 8 hours to get home. Normally it takes 30 minutes to drive 17.5 miles with no traffic and about an hour with traffic. #shootmeintheface
Looking back we were some of the lucky ones. People that got on the interstates were stuck for over 24 hours. I can’t even imagine because I was loosing it at 8 hours. I am so thankful that Timothy and I were in it together. If I had been by myself, I would have lost it. Literally. It was THAT stressful. #ballingmyeyesout
The worst part is realizing how this city/region is not prepared for any type of major catastrophe or terrorist attack. We will all perish. #dead Sorry to be so pessimistic, but it’s the truth. Also, having grown up in the south, it makes me realize how much the south sucks even more than I did before. #dirtysouthmoreliketrashysouth
Atlanta is a region not just a city. All of the surrounding counties only care about themselves and their county. There is no such thing as regionalism here and it is a damn travesty. Can you believe that Atlanta is still using the same rail system that they developed in the 70’s? It hasn’t changed in almost 40 years! That’s insane! It should be more developed and grant access to more places, but it doesn’t because heaven forbid the riff raff be able to travel to the precious burbs. #sorryformyrant #imdonenow
Anyway, we came out of the whole ordeal without having any slips, spin outs, accidents or wrecks. At one point, someone almost t-boned us and it was by the grace of GOD that we were untouched. I also enjoyed “working” from home for two days. It was like a mini vacation. #itbetterneverhappenagain

I have a lot of hair. Unfortunately, the texture of my hair is thin, flat and oily. There is a little bit of wave to it in the back around my neck, but nothing at the crown or in the front. So my hair gets really oily around my face and at my crown. I hate washing my hair everyday. I try to go every other day, but that doesn’t work so well for me since I cut my hair short. I can’t just pull it back into a ponytail when I don’t want to wash it. I’ve tried dry shampoo sprays before and I particularly like the one that Tresemme has on the market.
I love the way it works and the way it smells. The only bad thing is that stuff is white and it looks crazy in my dark brown hair. So I started trying to find one that would work with brown hair, and only came across a few items on Amazon. Since I’m super broke, I decided to try and make my own. I did a little research and found a recipe.
1T Pure Cocoa Powder
1 T Corn Starch
I happen to have both of those in my kitchen pantry at the moment and on the fly decided to mix some up this morning instead of washing my hair. I just sprinkled some in my hair and rubbed it in with my fingers. Most people recommend using a makeup brush to apply it, but I was in a hurry and didn’t have time to find an extra one.
It totally worked! It absorbed the oil and didn’t make my hair look gray! I did use a little too much on my crown and it made my hair look a lighter shade of brown, and my scalp looked brown as well. I just kept rubbing it in and brushing it through until it looked better.

A disclaimer - Yes to Carrots did not ask me to write this blog post. I honestly didn’t have anything else to talk about. :)
When I was a senior in college, I got eczema for the first time. I thought it was poison ivy but it never went away. So I had to reconfigure my whole beauty routine.
After trying just about every product out there, a friend had some Yes to Carrots lip balm and it sparked my curiosity. I went to Target and bought some lip balm and body lotion. I have never looked back.
The original body lotion is my absolute favorite. I love the way it smells! Anyway, it doesn’t aggravate my eczema so that makes me happy. If you haven’t tried it, you should! I’ve also tried their Yes to Cucumber face stuff, Yes to Blueberries face stuff and I just bought the Yes to Grapefruit face stuff as well.
I’m almost 30 and I’ve had moderate acne since puberty. (I just had three show up on my neck and back. WTF? Isn’t it supposed to be gone by now?) Said acne has caused some dark spots over the years. Thank God I don’t have pocks! Anyway, I bought the face scrub, dark circle corrector and CC cream. The CC cream is supposed to be lightly tinted. I used it this morning for the first time and didn’t even notice any difference in my skin’s appearance. I’m not impressed thus far, but I’m going to give it a few weeks and see how it goes. Hopefully it will at least help correct some of my dark spots!

I have this shirt that I bought from The Limited. It is one of those dressy t-shirts that has shiny polyester fabric on the front and soft knit cotton fabric on the back. This shirt makes all my skinny pants look amazing because it is flowy at the waist.
This shirt is forever driving me crazy because is gets static-y. It is the middle of summer and I have static cling today. So my shirt that is supposed to disguises my fat belly, ends up accentuating it because it sticks right to my gut.
I’ve tried everything I could think of to get rid of it. Except today I decided to Google. Why didn’t I think of that to begin with? The first thing that came up was this article. http://www.diylife.com/2010/12/15/static-electricity-control/
I had already tried the first half of the list and then I got to the part where is said lotion. Huh, lotion? So I got my lotion out of my drawer at work and went into another office to apply it to my stomach.
IT TOTALLY WORKED! Take that static!

Hey oh! This whole story has happened so fast.
A couple of weeks ago, Mr. Hnkns woke me up in the middle of the night to say that he got an email from his school saying that a local church needed a pastor and they wanted to know if he was interested. So after talking to the local district superintendent, he has been appointed to a church and will start on September 1. However, we go this Sunday to meet everyone and see the parsonage.
I can’t even begin to describe how excited Mr. Hnkns has been since this all started. He can’t stop talking about how awesome this is going to be. I’m really excited too, but if I’m being honest, I’m worried at the same time. I’m protective of the people I love and I just don’t want to ever see him get hurt. He’s got a big ‘ol soft heart and I don’t want that heart to get hard.
Everyone has heard the horror stories of being in the ministry. I’m pretty naive in thinking that nothing bad will ever happen to us. I really hope it doesn’t, but I know everyone is human and flawed. People are going to hurt us and we will probably hurt others without intention. That’s life. All we can do is make the best of it.
Speaking of life, I finally feel like ours is starting. After college, it felt like everything came to a roaring stop. We kind of pitter patted around without knowing where our lives were going. Once Mr. Hnkns decided to stop running from his call, we’ve spent all of our energy trying to get to this day, and now it is here. I’m so excited!
I can’t wait to meet everyone on Sunday and see the parsonage. I’m really hoping that it will be bigger than our apartment that we have now. Surely it will be at least 3 bedrooms, and I’m hoping for a big kitchen. I love to cook but hate cooking in a small kitchen.
So that’s what’s new in our lives. Stay tuned.

So we have two cats. Elvira and Phantom.
Elvira is 7 and Phantom is 5. Let me just tell you that they live up to their names.
Mr. Hnkns got Elvira when we first started dating. I already had two cats and he decided that he wanted a cat as well. So he picked her out of the litter because she was very curious and playful. Since she was solid black we came up with her name. Plus Cassandra Peterson is a huge advocate for animals.
Anyway, she grew to live up to her name. She’s super feisty, loves to play, hunt and up until recently despised me. She loves her daddy and used to get super jealous when I would try to be near him. She is super independent and hates to be picked up or petted unless she asks for it.
Phantom is the complete opposite of Elvira. He’s a rescue kitty from the rough streets of East Knoxville. We were living in a teeny tiny house (600 sq ft) that my grandmother owned in the bad part of town. It was cheap rent and we loved it. Anyway, one day we noticed a bunch of kittens coming out from under a house across the alley. Yes, we had an alley which was actually our drive way. Those particular neighbors were terrible for the animals and abandoned them. Most of the kittens went off on their own before we could rescue them. However, phantom and his sister came to us looking for food and love. By this time we already had three cats in the house and I was super unsure about adding two more. We named them Bit and Torrent and decided to take them to the vet to get checked out for feline leukemia and get their shots. But the next day Bit got hit by a car and I was devastated, so we scooped Torrent up and brought him inside without knowing if he had any contagious diseases.
Unfortunately for him, Elvira hated him. Poor thing was terrified of her. He lived under the couch for months. He wouldn’t even come out to use the litter box. I had to put one under the couch it was so bad. The other two cats, which were much older, were super cool with him. Meanwhile, Elvira continued to get more and more aggressive with me. She would come up and just smack me in the face with her claws out without any provocation. She got me in the eye one day and I had decided that was enough. She was getting her claws removed. This changed Phantom’s life. Once she was out of the house, he came out from under the couch and finally got comfortable in his new home. When she came home he was able to stand up for himself and they’ve been best buddies ever since.
We gave him the name Phantom for numerous reasons. 1. The phantom of the opera mask on his face 2. His back looks like he’s wearing a black cape and 3. Because he is super skittish and will hide if he hears any sort of loud noise. He will literally disappear!
Since we moved to Atlanta, Elvira has finally started to warm up to me. We’ve had her for 7 years now so it took long enough. I guess she finally figured out that I wasn’t going anywhere. Can’t beat ‘em… join ’em. She will even come up to me and ask for me to pet her. It’s so weird.
So that is the story of our two cats. I hope it wasn’t too long or terribly boring. I’m sure I sound like a crazy cat lady, and I will proudly wear the title. I should blog about the two cats I had before Elvira and Phantom.

For the past few years, I’ve been avoiding lactose because I thought it was causing me some digestion problems. Now that I’ve been eating mostly Paleo meals, I’ve noticed my digestion is much better and I started eating ice cream again. I know it’s not paleo, but since I don’t’ have any carbohydrates during the day and I thought I could treat myself with a little frozen treat. Unfortunately, that has turned into an addiction for me. I’m currently plowing through a quart of Edy’s Cookies and Cream.
I want to buy an ice cream maker and make my own paleo version using stevia. Maybe the ice cream makers will start being discounted soon. I hope so. Otherwise, I am never going to meet my 130 pound goal by November.
